The English settled in the various cities in 1634 but were driven out by the Dutch, who captured Cochin in 1663 and subsequently Cochin and part of the city developed as centre of trade. During their conquest of India the British seized the town of Cochin in 1795 but allowed the Dutch to run it until 1814, when it became a possession of the East India Company. In 1936 Cochin was placed under the direct administration of the British government in India and given the status of a major port. Kerala became part of the Indian Union in 1951 Nov 1st. From thereon, Kerala has developed into a highly modern society. Kerala's journey started with its first elected Chief Minister E.M.S. Namboodripadu brought in numerous social reforms. His contribution to this state is unforgettable. The development of such a society wouldn't be possible without his initiatives. The land reform measures taken by him is to be pointed out. Kerala became the paradise for Rice cultivation and other agricultural produce. Land to the tillers and the land redistribution measures taken by the then Govt. is to be specially appreciated. Kerala has then been governed by highly respectable persons. The present Chief Minister is Shri. Oommen Chandy. |
